Important Meeting Tonight 5-7pm at Central Library Downtown
TONIGHT
5pm to 7pm
Hennepin County Central Library
200 Nicollet Mall
Doty Library Board Room
http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/public-works/cip/35WdetourRehab/
The City of Minneapolis is holding this second meeting pretty much for
downtown commuters and residents, the time and location were chosen to
allow maximum access for you guys.
When the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition and the City of Minneapolis met back
on my birthday in Janruary, we found out that these projects were happening
over the summer. The basic gist is that the feds are giving us money to
get the streets that deteriorated quicker than normal due to the bridge
collapse. This gives us an opportunity to place bike lanes on these
streets, and they are talking about adding lanes on 4th Ave, 5th Ave and
6th Street...
This is awesome, they're adding more lanes back into downtown!
However, it leaves out a vital east/west connection on 7th street. Also
happening this summer is a project which adds bike lanes to 7th from
Hennepin west, all the way up to Plymouth. Leaving out bike lanes on the
eastern portion of 7th through downtown seems like it will cut off a large
portion of south Minneapolis (primarily on 11th) from using 7th to access
this route up into to north. They are talking about possibly adding a lane
to 5th street to make up for this lack of a connection, but we have not
seen the plans yet and it is unclear if a bike lane would actually be able
to extend through the pedestrian area near City Hall. 7th is also getting
two Nice Ride bike rental Kiosks over the summer, including one pretty much
on the lawn of the government center ad another at HCMC. We're the number
one city for cycling in the US and we're going to be sending people out on
these bikes without a bike lane to ride in.
We really need to make sure that we have some sort of facilities on 7th as
part of the master plan for cycling in Minneapolis. If you agree with
this, please take a minute on your way home tonight to stop by this meeting
and talk to the engineers, review the plans and leave your comments. If
you are not a downtown worker or resident, but still think that 7th street
is important, please try to make it down as well.
(Aside - I don't have an update on 1st Ave or Hennepin right now, but look
for more opportunities for input on those streets as well, hopefully soon.)

work they're doing for Minneapolis, please check their website at

MMI 9 Saturday
Saturday was race day. Here's what went down
breakfast

Mark and Austin
outside Breakaway

sign up and trophy

that's Von Munz and Sparrow behind the table
manifest

the race was setup with four deliveries, two of which were round trip. There were two quick stops and four "call ins" you had to be at Breakaway during a half hour window to learn the stops
Like the Stupor Bowl the start was a mystery and we ended up on top of the reservoir. Not having the slightest clue how to get around Milwaukee, Wayne (owner of Breakaway) hooked me up with his smartest dude, Matt Ungerman aka Jade Leader. At first Jade was a little leary of having a tail, but as the race went on he seemed pretty stoked to have another guy fighting the wind with him. Milwaukee is both hilly (compared to MPLS) and the day was wicked windy.
I won't bore you with the details of the race, but Matt and I finished 2nd and 3rd. We missed out on first place to James Lalonde by four minutes. The bummer thing is that we had to fix a flat and without that inconvenience may have taken the whole thing. Of course you can say "if I rode a perfect race I'd have won" all day, and in the end you take what you get and we were pretty fucking stoked to have finished so well.
Towards the end of the race I told Matt that there was no way I was going to sprint him for it, as the dude with the route it was his town, and his honor to come in first. He replied that he wanted me to take it since I was on the sharp end most of the day. We went back and forth on this and in the end he allowed me the honor. Huge thanks to Matt, it was a blast to ride with you. Thank you so much for the good route and the good times. It will be my honor to have you ride with me during Stupor Bowl, I owe you one.
The finish outside of the Hi Hat

First Female

that's Shaggy of Shag Bags fame on the close right
Austin Horse

Austin finished top ten routing himself. That's pretty damn good in a town you've never been to before

prize table

first place Shag Bag and bike awarded to first female

at awards everybody got HJ's from this guy

Kevin Sparrow of Cog showing some love

First Place Men: James LaLonde

loving this photo. If you don't know who James is, look it up. He's one of the fastest cross racers in the Midwest and has been Single Speed CX National Champ. Dude's a serious hoss in the world of "real" racing.
Second Place Men, First Place Out of Town: Jeff Frane

Third Place Men, First Fixed: Matt Ungerman aka Jade Leader

The race was super well run and a ton of fun. Thanks to the organizers and thanks to my guardian angel.

R.I.P. Guru
GURU (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) dead at 43

Groundbreaking U.S. rapper and Gang Starr co-founder Guru died Monday night, a month after the cancer-stricken artist collapsed and went into a coma, MTV reported.
The 43-year-old rapper, whose real name is Keith Elam, had been suffering from cancer for over a year. The report quoted a statement from Guru's camp that inferred the cause was complications from cancer.
“According to [producer] Solar, Guru suffered from the malicious illness for over a year and after numerous special treatments under the supervision of medical specialists failed, the legendary MC succumbed to the disease. Guru always tried to keep this harrowing diagnosis in private but in early 2010 he had to admit himself to hospital due to serious effects caused by the disease.”
Guru formed the group with DJ Premier in 1985, and they put out six albums, including the well-received "Daily Operation" and "Moment of Truth."

Bike Chain Bracelet
tons of folks wear bike chain bracelets, but check out Yum-Yum's (aka Brad, aka the guy who drew the metal shirts). He's been wearing it for so many years that he's managed to wear down a signifcant portion of the metal

MMI Friday
Went exploring/drinking
outside Miller Park

Next stop was this rad old cemetary (I think it was called Lakewood) to check out the "valley of the kings." The valley of the kings is this little triangle where the Blatz, Schlitz, and Pabst families all have monuments facing each other.
Obviously you know who Pabst is, but if you're not familiar with Schlitz or Blatz, I'm pretty sure our friendship is over.
The monuments weren't as large or ornate as I was expecting but they were old (1800's), tasteful and very very cool.
Pabst

Schlitz

"Lost May 7, 1875"
Blatz

Mark and his pink bike imagining the metal album cover opportunities

In the cemetary we rode over this bridge and underneath it was this drained pond, which of course I had to ride. It was a little dirty but the banks were good.
the pictures don't really do it justice, they cruved all the way around and were nicely angled. This photo makes them look way flatter than they were. Check out the little gap to play on in the upper right.
]

We then headed down to the Kinnick Kinnick (sp?) river. Riding these aquaducts was a blast, the Dropout was the perfect bike for jumping the upeneded slabs and dirt mounds. Check out the banks in the next couple of photos. They too were freaking awesome.

The dudes on the left are both brewers (beer not baseball) Luther on the left works for Lakefront Brewery and was one of the responsibles for the Fixed Gear Ale. Jakob on the right, brews for Stonefly Brewing Company an excellent brew pub.

So I says to them, if you guys are such beer aficionado's why the Modelo?
Their reply "Big can."
