Loch Ness Monster spotted in Lake Harriet
Spotted this while riding to work this morning

I don't know why it was there, if it was a joke or a promotional thing or whatever. But there was a large crowd gathering and a whole bunch of news teams running along the bike path to get over to the commotion.
any insights?

All-City Gravel Racer
Inspired by the Freeman Transport Gravel Racer and the fact that when done right I can route it so that I get 6 miles of gravel and 9 miles of singletrack on the commute to work, I decided to turn the original Big Block proto into a dirt road crusher.

Two brakes, a 44X17 fixed gear, 32c Ritchey Speedmax tires, XTR Canti Levers, beat to shit 612 Track Crank early samples, and a riser bar. I'm also stoked to get back on my Suzue Promax hubset, which has sat unused for a while now and is one of the favorite pieces of componentry that I own.

*for those of you out there who may care: that "Bike Jerks" spokecard says Galactic Mystery Solvers on the other side and is the first thing we ever produced that said Bike Jerks on it. GMS was my first little company*
Here are some shots of the tire clearance. The 32c's fit fine with a comfortable amount of room to spare, but I wouldn't want to go any bigger. Any larger of a tire and you'd likely collect a bunch of mud and dirt and crap.

The subtle dimpling of the chainstays gives you all the clearance you need, without big open ugly spaces
for comparison here is my new bike (same clearance) with a 25c road tire

here's a shitty pic of the fork crown with the knobby to give you the full scoop.

There are few things hotter than a track bike with knobbies on it. I guess a track bike with knobbies without brakes for one, but I need em for those hills and clipless pedals. I'm getting up early tomorrow to give her a test. I'll likely post a full review with pics on the All-City blog.
cheers

Rebuilt Rear
Last night I went out riding in the neighborhood and trashed my rear wheel. It was my first ride on the Holdfast straps and my foot position when doing a rockwalk is completely different on the Holdfast's vs. my usual clips and cages. It's just a whole different feel, and I have to relearn the trick a little bit. (I'm super pumped to own a pair of the Holdfasts and give them a try. Some folks swear by Powergrips but I've never had the heart to try them out. They always seemed super sketch. Now that there's a way nicer alternative, it's definitely time to see how the other side lives. Big thanks to Jeremiah at Holdfast, be seeing you soon.)
While attempting to figure out the trick my rear wheel finally gave up the ghost. It had been put out of true and into semi-true so many times that the spoke tension was all over the map and the tight clearance of the Volume frameset doesn't allow for running a wheel that is shaky. My last three rides have ended with my tire rubbing on the stays.
I've even been forced to downsize the tire from a 32c to a 28c in order to give my rear wheel some more breathing room in the Cutter's tight stays. While I have been totally pleased with the ride of my Cutter, I find the lack of attention to the important details maddening. Give me dropouts I can use and more tire clearance.

Anthony at Handspun rim swapped a new Deep V for me, and this will be the first time I've dealt serious abuse to a rebuilt tied and solder setup. I'm anxious to see how it goes. Hopefully with a smaller tire and a more stable rim, I'll be having more fun.

new look
Late last night I decided to play with the look of the blog. I've done this many times in the past and then changed it right back. this time I'm going to sleep on it and see how it goes. I've wanted to have a colored background for a while now because it makes the photos pop
I'm thinking it needs bright color in the lettering of the header.
we'll see. I doubt it will stay like this for long. but hey let's have some fun

Rocky 7 Prize Bag
Here's the prize bag that Andy from Trash Bags has made for the Upcoming Rocky 7 in Philly
If you'd like Andy to make you a bag shoot him an email at: trashmessengerbags@gmail.com
He makes other things as well. Like backpacks, tool pouches, and fanny packs (don't bother calling it a "hip pouch." you ain't foolin nobody)

Mark Zeh Track Bike
Mark Zeh was a Minneapolis frame builder in the early 90's. I don't know much about him, but I have seen many examples of his work and they are all very very nice. Mark was also one of the collaborators on the "Sub 11" dropout, familiar to most as the Surly horizontal dropout (you know that large eared one on the Steamroller).
This bike is pretty neat and the pics were forwarded by my man VZ.

BFF Minneapolis in Pictures and a few words
It's Sunday of the BFF here in Minneapolis and I'm still trying to wrap my mind around what happened. The last 72 hours or so have been a blur of riding, watching, boozing, napping, and licking the wounds incurred during those aforementioned activities.
Here are some shots of the weekend. It was a hell of a time. The race went off swimmingly, the films were better than they ever have been, seeing myself on the screen during the Stupor Bowl movie was odd and humbling, and one of the greatest bike parties that I have ever been to took place at One on One on Saturday night. For those who've never partied, derby'd (in Minneapolis we don't play foot down, we derby. it's reckless, amazing, and brutal) or hung out in the alley downtown on a warm summer night I suggest you come by for the All City Championship (Aug 20-23) and give it a try. It's pretty life affirming in that all these seemingly silly life choices that you've made all come crashing down and lay themselves out in a way that makes you realize that you've been always been correct in your convictions and are indeed a master of your own destiny.
